In a recent discussion on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Margaret Qualley mentioned that her skin required “a year” to heal from the irritation caused by the facial prosthetics utilized in “The Substance.” The destruction was so severe that director Coralie Fargeat had to crop her face out in specific scenes.
“At the start, during the opening credits when they’re filming up my skirt amidst the palm trees with long lenses from below, it’s simply because my face looked so messed up,” Qualley stated. “They were no longer able to shoot my face.”
The acne caused by the prosthetics continued long after “The Substance” finished filming and remained as she started work on her next movie, “Kinds of Kindness,” where she portrayed four roles: Vivian, Martha, Rebecca, and Ruth. Fortunately, the acne worked to her advantage in the Yorgos Lanthimos film.
“Well, are you familiar with the character who has all that acne?” “That was merely my acne from the prosthetics,” Qualley stated. “And I thought, ‘Wow, this is somewhat ideal.’ I’m portraying various characters. For one of them, we’ll utilize all my wild prosthetic acne. “It likely took me around a year to regain my physical health from everything.”
“The Substance” has surfaced as an unexpected contender in this year’s award season, given that horror usually doesn’t perform well with voters. Demi Moore won her first Golden Globe this year for her starring role in “The Substance,” which tells the story of an aging television star who employs a secret miracle drug to fashion a younger, more sellable version of herself.
