Lisa Kudrow understands that the late Matthew Perry will always support her despite his absence.
The Friends alum recently shared that her co-star—who passed away in October 2023 due to the immediate effects of ketamine—had left her a special note, though she found it only after his death.
“Matthew handed that to me after our final episode,” Lisa mentioned during the Jan. 7 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, alluding to a remarkable cookie jar prop that Matthew had removed from the set. “I recently discovered the note he had placed in it for me.” I hadn’t looked inside or opened it. However, yes, he did. “There was a note inside, and I overlooked it.”
Though she kept the note’s contents to herself, Lisa sentimentally remarked, “Timing is everything.”
The No Good Deed actor—who also appeared with David Schwimmer, Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, and Matt LeBlanc in Friends—had earlier elaborated on the meaning of the present, which is shaped like a clock and says “Cookie Time.”
“We filmed a scene years before we completed it,” Lisa mentioned in a 2020 guest spot on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “My response was, ‘Ohhh, I’m running late. “I should head out now,” and I realized too late that I don’t have a watch. While the words were flowing, I thought, ‘Oh great, there’s a clock,’ and I pointed to it and remarked, ‘Oh, check the time.’ “I should start heading out.”
Following the incident, she mentioned that Matthew came over and inquired, “Did you gesture toward the cookie jar and remark, ‘Look at the time’?” The revelation left them “laughing uncontrollably and weeping.”
That kind of laughter is precisely what Lisa—who has son Julian, 26, with her husband Michel Stern—will recall about Matthew after his sudden passing.
“Thank you for making me laugh so intensely at something you said that my muscles hurt, and tears streamed down my face EVERY DAY,” she expressed in a November 2023 tribute on Instagram. “Thank you for your willingness in a six-way relationship that needed concessions.” And plenty of ‘chatter.’ Thank you for coming to work even when you were unwell and for being absolutely fantastic.
Observing that Friends was “the greatest decade a person can experience,” Lisa finished by stating, “I appreciate the moments I shared with you, Matthew.”
