Action star Jackie Chan has wrapped up principal photography on “The Shadow’s Edge,” a tense thriller that signifies his second partnership with Chinese director Larry Yang. The pair had earlier hit the jackpot with “Ride On,” which ruled Asian box offices in 2023, becoming the highest-grossing Chinese film in Japan and ranking among the top three Chinese films released in Malaysia that year.
Set against the vibrant neon scenery of Macau, the film features Chan as a seasoned surveillance specialist called back from retirement by the local police department. He’s assigned to guide a skilled group of young detectives in tracking down a cunning gang of thieves that has been outsmarting law enforcement. The story contrasts traditional surveillance methods with modern technology in what is described as an intense game of cat and mouse.
The project brings together a stellar ensemble that connects different generations of Asian entertainment. Chan appears alongside Zhang Zifeng, the breakout star of “Sister” and the “Volunteers” franchise, as well as emerging talent Ci Sha, who recently performed in the “Creation of the Gods” epic. In an impressive crossover casting achievement, the movie includes Jun (Wen Junhui) from the K-pop supergroup Seventeen, signifying an important milestone in the artist’s acting journey.
The production also marks a long-anticipated reunion between Chan and Tony Leung Ka-fai, a five-time winner of the Hong Kong Film Award. The seasoned actors haven’t appeared together on screen since their 2005 project, “The Myth.” Leung, who is also scheduled to feature in Tsui Hark’s highly awaited “Legends of the Condor Heroes,” adds extra star power to the cast.
Victoria Hon, who earlier produced “Ride On,” comes back to oversee the project. The movie is supported by iQiyi Pictures, Tao Tickets, Hairun Pictures, and China ChenXiang.
Sales company Golden Network Asia, which has managed Chan’s latest worldwide successes such as “Ride On,” “Vanguard,” “Kung Fu Yoga,” “Railroad Tigers,” and “Dragon Blade,” will showcase “The Shadow’s Edge” to global buyers at the forthcoming European Film Market.
