Taylor Swift was reportedly referred to by Matty Healy as a casual romantic liaison about whom he won’t be writing songs about.

After becoming “more well-known” after dating Taylor Swift, Matty Healy of the 1975 talked about the kind of music he wants to create and called creating songs about real life “obvious.”

The 1975’s leader, who briefly dated Taylor Swift in early 2023, talked about what motivates him to write music now that he “became a way more well-known public figure for loads of different reasons.” Swifties are also questioning whether he was making fun of Taylor’s songwriting with his eye-opening remarks.

“I would kind of just be lying if I made a record about, I don’t know, all the stuff that was said about me or my casual romantic liaisons,” Matty stated on the Oct. 22 episode of the Doomscroll podcast, “or whatever it may be that I’ve kind of become known for, just because I was famous.”

Following what seemed to be a reference to his relationship with Taylor—who has been dating Kansas City Chiefs football player Travis Kelce since summer 2023—Matty also seemed to talk about her music, which is based on personal experiences (the songs “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived” and “Fortnight,” which are allegedly about Matty, are on Taylor’s Tortured Poets Department album).

He went on to say, “I believe that many artists develop a strong interest in their lore or in the events that have occurred outside of their art that people are aware of, and they wish to address that.” And it’s fair enough.

However, the 35-year-old, who became engaged to Gabbriette Bechtel in June, clarified that drawing on real-life experience is not something he has ever imagined doing.

Matty said, “I think that’s an obvious thing to draw from.” Simply put, I have no interest in it. I see people doing it too, and it’s not engaging. The concept of writing a record about something that happened to me personally that will be around two years old by the time I publish it.”

Using “journal entries and little bits of heartbreak,” the “About You” singer acknowledged that he “used to write about relationships a lot more.” However, these days, he prefers to make music that spark discourse.

“I hope my work is interesting art pop,” he said, adding that it might help make scholarly issues that piqued his attention more widely known.
