Adele blocked the sale of a £6m ‘haunted’ house – owner

Adele has been alleged by the mansion’s owners to have hindered the sale of their £6m property, as they assert she once remarked that it was haunted.

The acclaimed singer leased the Grade II-listed Lock House located in Partridge Green, West Sussex, in 2012.

The owner has requested planning approval to change the property from one home into three living spaces and to turn an existing garage and apartment into an independent cottage.

In the submission, the owner stated that remarks made by Adele in an interview about the 10-bedroom house being haunted had obstructed the selling process.

“The initial tenant, Adele, resided for six months and damaged the property by claiming it is haunted,” it stated.

“This remark had an adverse effect on subsequent marketing strategies and still influences the property’s reputation today.”

‘The shivers’

While talking about Lock House during an interview with Anderson Cooper on CBS when she resided there, Adele remarked: “This part’s really quite frightening, honestly.”

“I’m not just wandering around here by myself.” “It sends chills down my spine.”

Adele did not mention the term “haunted” in the interview.

Once the singer left the property, it was put back on the market, but did not attract any offers.

The property was subsequently leased to a tenant aiming to establish a custom dressmaking business. However, it was subsequently found that the tenant operated a residential retreat featuring 11 guest bedrooms and a fitness boot camp, according to the application.

As noted in the application, the owner has been making efforts to sell the property for approximately 14 years.

The sole offer made was back in August 2020, but the potential buyer backed out after discovering the property’s alleged haunted reputation, it noted.

Lock House was built around 1909 and then experienced a significant renovation project in 1940.

In 1971, it was partitioned and auctioned in 26 distinct lots. However, it was later purchased by the church and transformed into the Convent of the Visitation.

The present owner obtained Lock House in 2003 from a real estate dealer, who had earlier bought it after the convent moved to Albourne.

As per its present listing, Lock House and the accompanying 32-acre property include 10 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, both an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, a tennis court, a helipad, and a cinema room.

It is listed for £5,995,000.
